In recent years, Santa Ana has developed into the foodie metropolis in the central valley of Costa Rica. Some of the best restaurants in Costa Rica can be found here. But there are also plenty of small sodas and mini-restaurants, so there is something to suit every taste. Everything within walking distance to our posada.

Bacchus:
Antigua Casa Quitirrisí, on the main street, 600 m from the Posada, tel. 4001-5418. Fine Mediterranean cuisine in the oldest house in Costa Rica. A variety of dishes pamper the palate and eyes, the trout al cartoccio is excellent, great service. Open: Mon–Fri 12–3 and 6–10, Sat 12–10 and Sun 12–8 p.m.
Doris Metropolitana
Santa Ana, C. 1, Av. 1–3, 550 m, Tel. 2282-2221. You won't get such tender meat anywhere else - a must for meat eaters! Not exactly cheap, but worth it. Good service, Israeli management. Daily 12pm-11pm
Container space
121, 50 m south of the Bacchus, 650 m from the Posada, a collection of various snack bars and small restaurants, a beer garden, cheap, good for the undecided, there is something for every taste here. Daily from 11.30am
Bar Restaurant El Coco
Av. 2, C. Central–1. 700 m from Posada Nena. The oldest inn in western San José has been family-owned for over 40 years. Good service and low prices, always well attended, warm food until the early hours, Saturday oldies mix, Sun karaoke. Closed on Tuesdays from 11 a.m
Donde Toto
A310, opposite the INVU football pitch in the Vindi mini-centre, 650 m. Tel. 2203-3111. Toto prepares excellent pizza and pasta at low prices, he prepares any combination upon request and also delivers to the posada. Every day except Monday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m
Maxi's Restaurante
Calle San Rafael, 500 m south of Plaza Antigua on Carretera Vieja, 1.9 km, Tel. 2282-8619. Original Caribbean food, huge portions. Operator Ricky is the son of the legendary Maxi at Playa Manzanillo, and he remains true to his father's style. Open daily
Al Tapas
200 m north of Cruz Roja, towards Lindora. 1 km from Posada Nena, Spanish tapas bar with delicious snacks; original toilets. Good live music on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, Open: Tue 5pm - 1am, Wed - Sun 11.30am - 2am.
Taco Bar
200 m north of Cruz Roja. 1.1 km, branch of the successful taco bar in Jacó. The specialty is fish tacos, but there are also many other fish dishes; the tuna is tender and juicy. Lots of vegetarian options, self-service salad bar included. Open: Tue–Sun 7 a.m.–9:30 p.m.
Tap House
in City Place on the Radial to Lindora, a little above the Taco Bar, 1.4 km, at the very back of the business center. American sports bar, great hamburgers, over 50 different types of beer on tap. Open: Mon–Thurs 5–11 p.m., Fri–Sun 12–11 p.m.
Naans & Curry
Lindora de Santa Ana, CC Momentum, 2.9 km, tel. 2282-5470. Fantastic Indian restaurant: tandoori, tikka masalas, paalak and many curry specialties. There is an air-conditioned room upstairs. Daily 11am-10pm.
Mocapan
At CC Santa Ana Towncenter, 121, (T) 2289-7777, (W) www.mocapan.com. Excellent German bakery with good bread, rolls and pretzels. Breakfast, lunch, salads. (Ö) Mon–Sat 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sun 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Taj Mahal
between Escazú and Santa Ana on the old country road. Indian restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, guests can watch the varied dishes being prepared in the tandoori; not cheap, but good. Opening hours: Tue–Sat 12–3 p.m. and 6–11 p.m., Sun 1–9 p.m.
Chez Christophe
San Rafael de Escazú, 75 m south of Multi Centro Paco. French bakery for culinary delights. Fragrant baked goods, fresh baguettes and delicious sandwiches. Selected dishes are offered from midday. (Ö) Tue–Sat 7 a.m.–7 p.m., Sun from 8 a.m.–7 p.m.
